I-10 Interchange Ramp and Crossroad Closures

Background
The first phase of the I-10 Improvement Project in the West Valley has been completed, with two new inside lanes constructed in each direction between Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) and Sarival Avenue. The new lanes are part of a massive I-10 Improvement Project underway between Loop 101 and Verrado Way to reduce congestion and improve commute times along this stretch of freeway.

Construction activity will now move to the outside lanes of I-10 to complete the freeway widening between Dysart Road and Sarival Avenue by adding another regular lane in each direction. Adding the remaining lane along this stretch will result in a continuous 10-lane freeway between Loop 101 and Sarival Avenue, further reducing congestion caused by the current merging of traffic into fewer lanes.

Because there is no room to add a new outside lane within the existing freeway footprint, the outside edge of the roadway will need to be extended. As with the inside widening project, where I-10 crosses over major arterial streets, the freeway overpass bridges will need to be reconstructed to accommodate the additional lane.

During this work, interchange ramps will need to be closed temporarily for approximately 40 days to reconstruct the new, wider section of bridge. The ramp closures will be needed at the following interchanges: Dysart Road, Litchfield Road, Bullard Avenue and Estrella/Pebble Creek Parkway and will be phased, so that adjacent ramps will not be closed simultaneously.

During the ramp closures, traffic will be detoured to adjacent interchanges for freeway access. There will be no ramp or crossroad closures during race events at Phoenix International Raceway.

The crossroads beneath I-10 at these locations will also need to be closed at two separate times for extended periods – first to install and later to remove falsework needed to widen the bridges. These closure periods will be scheduled during weekdays. The crossroads will be reopened on weekends. Short-term closures of the crossroads will also be required to remove bridge overhangs, pour concrete and other construction related to the bridge reconstruction, and may occur during overnight hours on weekdays, or on weekend mornings. Crossroad closures will not occur simultaneously during ramp closures at the same interchange. Work to widen both sides of the bridges will be done simultaneously to avoid separate closures for the I-10 eastbound and westbound bridge work. During crossroad closures, traffic will be detoured to adjacent crossroads.

All bridge and ramp reconstruction work is expected to be completed by late 2010.

ADOT is working closely with the local governments and the construction contractor to carefully phase the widening work on I-10 and minimize inconvenience to the community whenever possible, while completing the work on schedule.

Drivers should anticipate delays and allow extra time, or adjust travel to avoid closures and restrictions. ADOT appreciates your patience as we complete the widening work on I-10.
